The Future
WHY ST. PHILIP'S?
The Victorians built some elaborate and beautiful places, including St. Philip's. But they were not so clever at choosing the best materials or construction methods. Urgent repairs are needed to keep the Church and Centre open.
St. Philip's has served the area of Maidstone to the south of the town centre for over 140 years. It has become not only a landmark in the town's skyscape but serves as an essential centre of worship and outreach.
After this time the ragstone facing on the tower now needed replacing. Without major repairs the church and centre would have had to close. The cost had been estimated by the architects as £100,000, but the costs escalated to £131,000. Unfortunately St. Philip's did not qualify for help on this scale from either the Diocese or funding from the National Lottery.
St. Philip's congregation and Centre users and Friends decided to raise the finance themselves, by fund raising events and appeals to the public. The response since March 2000 has been magnificent. £128,000 has been raised through enormous efforts in the local community.
